Spring Begins: Cool Start, Midweek Warm-Up, and a Stormy Cooldown Ahead

WWW Post

Good Afternoon Hilltoppers!  After a blistering start to Spring, this week will start off feeling much more seasonal and comfortable than the last.

To start the week, temperatures are looking almost forty degrees cooler than this past weekend’s heat wave.  With high temperatures in the mid-upper 50s, today is going to feel much more like early spring than the summer-like conditions of this past weekend.  Low temperatures tomorrow morning are expected to drop into the upper-30s, which could be cold enough for a patchy frost to develop, so be sure to bring any plants you may have set out this past weekend inside.  Winds will be primarily out of the north-northeast with a stiff breeze of 10-15 mph, peaking mid-afternoon.  After a low-level cloud layer exits the region this morning, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions are expected through the afternoon and evening, with no precipitation expected.  While the day is colder, it will still be nice to get out and enjoy the shot of cool weather before we’re thrown back into a warmer than normal weather pattern.

Tomorrow’s temperatures will be only slightly warmer than today’s, with high temperatures across the area expected to remain in the upper 50s/lower 60s and lows in the mid-40s Wednesday morning.  Clouds in the morning are expected to exit the region and make way for generally clear conditions for the rest of the day.  To complement the clearer conditions, a gentle breeze from the east is expected for the majority of the day.  Wednesday will mark a shift in the weather pattern, with winds shifting southerly to bring warmer air into the Bowling Green area.  Though there is some disagreement between forecasting models on when the warm front bringing the warm air will reach Bowling Green, high temperatures in the region are still expected to rise into at least the upper 60s, and lows in the 50s the following morning are anticipated.  With the arrival of the front, a warm breeze is expected from the south-southwest, and conditions Wednesday will likely be mostly cloudy.  At this time, no precipitation is expected, but a patch of drizzle especially south and east of Bowling Green can’t entirely be ruled out.

The period from Thursday through Saturday night can be described as a big drop on a rollercoaster.  Thursday will be warm, with temperatures expected to rise into the upper 70s/lower 80s, which will be a great time to go enjoy the blossoming cherry blossom trees across campus, ahead of a strong cold front Friday morning.  Conditions Thursday in the day are expected to be relatively clear, but clouding up during the evening and overnight hours.  Overnight, rain showers and thunderstorms will approach Bowling Green from the north-northwest, and by Friday morning, the area will be experiencing those showers and thunderstorms along with winds from the north gusting 30-40 mph along the front.  The rain will persist in pockets until mid-afternoon, and cloud conditions will gradually clear out through the evening hours.  Temperatures during this time are going to dip sharply, with temperatures Friday morning in the mid-60s dropping throughout the day to the mid-40s by nightfall.  From there, they’ll continue to drop below freezing to about 30 degrees Saturday morning.  Saturday will be cool, though with clearer conditions and no precipitation expected.  High temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s are expected to end the week, and from there temperatures will gradually rise next week as part of another warm pattern.  Happy Spring Western Kentucky!
