“It was a gratifying rivalry victory,” Head Coach Tyson Helton said.

Western Kentucky pushes their winning streak in this historic rivalry to 7 in a row. Western Kentucky now leads the series 39-35-1.

Western Kentucky University is maintaining its momentum with the impressive Redshirt Freshman, Rodney Tisdale Jr., who is earning his third consecutive start. Since Tisdale’s ascendance to the starting position, WKU has achieved a commendable 2-0 record. La’vell Wright made history by scoring WKU’s first opening drive touchdown of the season, a feat not accomplished since the New Mexico State game in 2024, establishing an early 7-0 lead against the Blue Raiders. The first quarter was replete with exhilarating highlights from both teams, demonstrating the fierce competitiveness characteristic of this storied rivalry.

The second quarter commenced with a sack by MTSU, but just two plays later, Tisdale delivered a precise 22-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Henry, extending the lead to 14-0. MTSU responded with determination as Roman Gagliano connected with AJ Jones for a touchdown, narrowing the score to 14-7. The Blue Raiders seized control of the game, executing a critical third-down stop and showcasing a remarkable 64-yard run by Gagliano, who broke multiple tackles. WKU’s defense stood tall, holding MTSU to a field goal, which brought the score to 14-10.

Capitalizing on their momentum, Tisdale found Noah Myers for a 3-yard touchdown pass, increasing the lead to 21-10. WKU concluded the half with a defensive sack, maintaining their advantage at 21-10. MTSU emerged from halftime with vigor, as Gagliano connected with Myles Butler on a short route that turned into a 52-yard touchdown, reducing the deficit to 21-16, although WKU successfully thwarted MTSU’s two-point conversion attempt. Tisdale continued to shine, executing an 8-yard touchdown run that pushed the lead to 28-16, marking his third total touchdown of the game.

MTSU, however, mounted a balanced offensive attack on their next drive, with DJ Taylor breaking free for a 34-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to a mere five points at 28-23. Despite the Hilltoppers’ momentum, they squandered an opportunity with a missed 26-yard field goal. MTSU attempted to advance the ball, but WKU’s defense stifled their efforts, forcing a stall in their drive. MTSU regained momentum as Parker Hughes intercepted KD Hutchinson and returned the ball to the Hilltoppers’ 32-yard line. The Blue Raiders maintained their offensive surge, connecting on a deep pass that brought them to WKU’s 5-yard line, aided by a roughing the passer penalty.

WKU’s defense responded with a critical sack, forcing MTSU to settle for a field goal, bringing the score to 28-26. Tisdale then connected with Kelby Williams on a 45-yard pass, propelling WKU into the red zone. The Hilltoppers capitalized on this opportunity, as Tisdale found Noah Myers once again for a 1-yard touchdown pass, marking Myers’ second touchdown of the evening and extending the lead to 35-26. WKU’s defense forced a three-and-out, positioning them to secure the victory with 3:34 remaining in the game. La’vell Wright broke free for a 37-yard touchdown run, increasing the lead to 42-26, marking his second touchdown of the game.”We have not seen such explosive runs from our running backs in quite some time,”Helton said. This decisive score sealed the victory for WKU, who triumphed with a final score of 42-26.”Sitting here at 8-2 after losing 75% of our team speaks volumes about our staff and our players,” Helton said. Since Tisdale Jr. has started WKU is 3-0. As they gear up travel to Baton Rogue on Saturday night and play the LSU Tigers.

Tyson Helton: “I am immensely proud of our team. This game unfolded as I anticipated against a formidable opponent. It was a gratifying rivalry victory. I knew we would need to score in the mid-30s; I instructed the offense that we needed at least 30 points to secure the win. Witnessing our team unite in victory was rewarding. Rodney is gaining confidence; he is a quality football player with immense potential. We controlled our own destiny on offense tonight, and our defense delivered numerous critical stops. There were countless commendable performances from both sides of the ball. We are continually improving. I was quite impressed with Gagliano; he orchestrated the offense as a quarterback should. We have not seen such explosive runs from our running backs in quite some time. The three-headed monster is impressive; I have great admiration for all three of them. We look forward to the significant opportunity of playing against LSU in one of the premier stadiums in college football. We play to win, and we are excited about this opportunity. Our coaching staff prepared our players exceptionally well. We are a football family. I eagerly anticipate the match between Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State. This is an extraordinary football team, and I hold a special place in my heart for this group. I am immensely proud of our senior class and their accomplishments this season. Sitting here at 8-2 after losing 75% of our team speaks volumes about our staff and our players.”

Rodney Tisdale Jr.: “I believe we performed admirably today. We executed our game plan effectively. We were well-acquainted with their defensive style and aimed to support our defense by scoring consistently. We feel confident that we possess the capability to achieve this each week.”

Matthew Henry: “We had two weeks to prepare for this game. Our focus is always on taking it one game at a time. I commend MTSU; they presented a formidable front, but our passing game opened up opportunities for the running game. Regarding my future in the NFL, I have a story to tell and am eager to continue building on my journey. It was particularly special to have a strong performance on senior day; it was a memorable evening. We plan to approach our game against LSU with the same mindset we bring to every contest.”

Jalen Wester: “We played cohesively as a unit. We bend but do not break, maintaining a next-play mentality. We acknowledged our previous loss but moved on to the next play without dwelling on it. It is always a valuable opportunity to compete against a powerhouse like LSU. We must not defeat ourselves. It was significant to witness everyone playing in unison. Many of us will be watching the Kennesaw game.”

Mackavelli Malotumau: “We fell short in containing Gagliano. I looked to my left and saw my teammates, and I knew we had to finish strong. The crowd was electric; their support is greatly appreciated. We take it one game at a time.”
