Weekend Weather Shift- Cold Front Ushers in Wind and Falling Temps

Hello Bowling Green! It’s going to be an interesting, cooler weekend.

A cold front near Kentucky will be responsible for cooling us off and bringing the first wave of rain expected this weekend. Starting off with the rest of today, temperatures will likely peak around 1PM, with a high of 67. Windspeeds are expected to remain consistently in the teens until around 6PM. However, wind gusts could reach mid-20s mph. Winds will peak in the early afternoon and slowly calm throughout the remainder of the day and into Saturday. We are currently in a marginal and slight risk of storms today. The primary concerns are high straight-line winds and the possibility of severe hail. However, the environment continues to change, and the likelihood of hail keeps decreasing. This cold front will cool us down, but the main event, temperature-wise, begins early Sunday Morning.

As we move into Saturday, the environment starts out calm. Even with the Friday cold front, winds are still blowing from the southwest. Temperatures will bottom out on Saturday around 49 degrees at roughly 6AM. The day quickly warms up to a high of 67 around 1PM. Winds will remain mostly calm throughout Saturday, coming from the West and Southwest. Wind gusts will peak in the afternoon into the low teens. Be aware that wind gusts will pick up again, starting late Saturday and continuing through Sunday. Even though it will be cloudy throughout most of the day, it still looks like it will feel nice outside.

Moving into Sunday, the weather starts getting interesting again. A low-pressure system from the North will sweep across Indiana. A cold front extends from that low through our area. Even though the chance of severe weather appears low today, gusty winds could still pose a hazard. Windspeeds will consistently be in the teens throughout Sunday, peaking around 15mph from the late morning to the early afternoon. Wind gusts, however, could be hazardous, especially in the early morning hours. Gust speeds appear to peak between the mid/upper 20mph. Wind gusts throughout most of the day will remain consistently in the lower 20mph. The high temperature on Sunday will be near midnight, at 53. The temperature will continue to lower gradually throughout the day, thanks to this new air coming from the North. The low temperature will be around 29 °C before midnight on Monday morning. Precipitation amounts will be low because the environment ahead of this cold front is more stable and dry. Even with the significant plunge in temperatures, the environment is just not organized enough for a large swath of precipitation. What does ‘fall through’ could turn into sleet or snow by daybreak on Sunday. Any accumulations, though, will be meager or none. I would definitely want to bundle up towards the end of this weekend and watch out for occasionally slick roadways.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and stay warm.
