(Bowling Green, Ky.) — On April 2nd, 2025, Jermaine Savage stunned the entire KHSAA Girls 4th Region basketball community. Coach Savage was on the move. It felt surreal — a moment many believed wouldn’t come this soon.

“Jermaine Savage named new head basketball coach of the Russellville Lady Panthers,” read the headlines across WRUS, WNKY, and WBKO, sending shockwaves through the region’s hoops scene.

Coach Savage brings with him over two decades of coaching experience, a résumé stacked with district championships, regional crowns, and state tournament appearances. His track record speaks for itself — wherever Savage goes, success follows. And with championship teams often come championship-caliber players. During his most recent tenure, he guided multiple athletes to the collegiate level, including two-time 4th Region Player of the Year and incoming Tennessee Tech freshman LaReesha Cawthorn. Last season, Savage co-led a loaded Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats squad that featured seven seniors — including his own daughter (Jasmine Savage) — with three players set to continue their careers at the college level this fall.

Now, Coach Savage finds himself back at Russellville, once again at the helm of the Lady Panthers program. A former standout himself — an Austin Peay State University Hall of Fame inductee (1993-1996) — Savage has seamlessly transitioned his on-court success into coaching excellence, pouring his wealth of knowledge into every player he mentors.

On June 19th, I had the chance to get an early glimpse of what Savage is building in Russellville. His young Lady Panthers took the floor with intensity, energy, and grit — a far cry from the squad that managed just three wins combined over the previous two seasons. Going 2-0 on the day, the growth was evident. The “Savage Effect” is already taking hold.

Following the victories, Savage made his philosophy crystal clear, “We’re going to defend and be scrappy,” Savage said.

With a young, hungry roster willing to put in the work, Russellville’s Lady Panthers are poised to surprise many in the seasons ahead. Under Savage’s leadership, the rebuild is already ahead of schedule — and the rest of the 4th Region is officially on notice.
